The successors of the first apostles are the bishops and in this ancient tomb you see one of them portrayed. He is dressed in a particular way, very different from the knight who had been buried next to him. The bishop has a large ring on the ring finger, is holding a stick with his hand and is wearing a special pointed hat. What is the meaning of these symbols?
The ring is a symbol of loyalty. As a bridegroom to his bride, the bishop is faithful to his Church. The stick, which seems like one
used by shepherds, is called pastoral. The bishop, as the shepherd of a flock, must guide and protect its Christian community. pointed hat is the miter, the headdress of the masters of the past. The bishop is the master of the Word of God.
